The closer we get to actually punishing the banks, the closer we get to healing the system and finding a bottom. This is a crisis of confidence, we need the rule of law and common sense returned to our financial system.

Honestly. Protect the customers, let the creditors and shareholders suffer...that's how markets work. Save the TARP money and if anything, use it to protect solid banks who have made good decisions. Or use some of it to help people in foreclosure. Or just don't spend it at all!
Regardless, the government needs to examine bank balance sheets, shut down insolvent banks, and protect depositors. Why does the government have to buy these shitty assets to save these assholes and this unsustainable financial system?
